Stoma Care Specialist Nursing: A Guide for Clinical Practice is published
Angie Perrin, Clinical Education Lead at Salts Healthcare and Vice Chairperson for ASCN UK, has co-edited a new guide for Specialist Nurses in the stoma care field, which has now been published. Angie and her co-editor Maddie White, previous Chair of ASCN UK, a Specialist Stoma Care Nurse and the QE Hospital in Birmingham, are understandably delighted, particularly in view of the lengthy time the book has taken to compile, edit and finally publish.
Each chapter was written by a knowledgeable Specialist Stoma Care Nurse or expert within their field of practice, then edited by Maddie and Angie. It covers a very wide range of content for Specialist and General Nurses caring for individuals living with a stoma. The book details the anatomy and physiology of both the gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract and the associated disease processes; the management of colorectal and urological cancers; the types of surgery patients may undergo; the management of a stoma and some of the challenges that can occur when caring for a difficult stoma, as well as life following discharge from hospital – the impact on body image and sexuality and how the nurse can provide on-going support for the individual living with a stoma.
This valuable resource will educate hundreds of novice nurses, student nurses and carers who are keen to learn more about the specialist sphere of stoma care, for those who move into Stoma Care nursing in the coming years, as well as those advanced practitioners currently working within the specialty.
Congratulations Angie and Maddie on seeing all of your hard work finally come to fruition in the publishing of this fantastic new book!
