#ShareYourStory: Hannah
Hannah, aged 35, lives with an ileostomy after suffering with Ulcerative Colitis for 12 long years.
My stoma was life-saving
Although Hannah was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 12 years ago, she didn’t quite understand how ill she was and that ‘chronic’ really did mean for life. She assumed that after medication the symptoms would go away and she could get on with life – which of course isn’t the case with UC. Hannah would have flare ups which often resulted in her having terrible accidents out in public if she wasn’t close enough to a toilet. She says the shame and embarrassment still brings her to tears.
A second chance at life
It’s wonderful to hear that Hannah truly loves her stoma and what she can achieve having it. It has given her a new lease of life. A life without toilet paranoia, a life without tons of medication and a life without all of the symptoms that come along with Ulcerative Colitis. Most of all, it gave her a second chance at completing her family.
Stoma care products
When Hannah first had her stoma, she just stuck to what was recommended by her stoma care nurse. It wasn’t until the Purple Wings Charity Ball that she was including to a variety of other suppliers, including Salts Healthcare.
Hannah now loves our Confidence BE® drainable bags in black (especially when she’s getting dressed up and going out because they are so discreet!) She also uses the Salts Mouldable Seals with Aloe Vera.
Hannah’s Mantra
“I have achieved more in the last 3 years with my stoma than ever before. I had a healthy pregnancy and baby girl, I have been skiing twice, I am starting University this September to become a Teacher and I have just completed a virtual 75km run in May to raise money for the NHS. As long as you hydrate, choose the right bag for you, wear the necessary support belts/underwear and listen to your body you can achieve so much more than before”
