Antegrade Continent Enema (ACE) Study Day 

This study day is for specialist stoma care nurses who care for individuals living with an ACE.

We are offering two ACE study days, please note that presentations and information given is the same on both dates.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the ACE Procedure: Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Antegrade Continence Enema (ACE) procedure, including surgical formation using the appendix or bowel and its role in managing constipation and faecal leakage.

  • Pre- and Post-operative Care: Learn the key steps in preparing for and managing post-operative care following an ACE procedure, including wound care and patient recovery.

  • Home-based Irrigation Techniques: Acquire knowledge on administering ACE irrigation at home, including using catheters, enema solutions, and irrigation bags, to help caregivers support patients effectively.

  • Troubleshooting Complications: Understand common post-operative and long-term complications associated with ACE, such as stoma closure, bowel response issues, and minor leakage, along with strategies for prevention and resolution.

  • Customising Irrigation Schedules: Learn to assist patients in developing a personalised irrigation routine based on individual bowel response, helping to optimise the results of the ACE procedure for improved quality of life.

  • Supporting Patient Independence: Gain skills to educate and empower children and their caregivers to independently manage the ACE procedure, focusing on safe and effective home care and catheter use.

Advanced Paediatric Study Day 

This is study day is for specialist stoma care nurses who care for babies and children intermittently with their service to help update and refresh knowledge.

  • Master Complication Management: Develop skills to recognise, prevent, and manage stoma complications, including peristomal skin breakdown, systemic complications, and post-stoma closure care.

  • Evidence-Based Stoma Care: Apply evidence-based best practices in paediatric stoma care, utilising global guidelines and research to optimise clinical outcomes for children with stomas.

  • Product Selection and Usage: Gain expertise in the appropriate use of paediatric stoma care products and accessories, tailoring care to the specific needs of neonates and children.

  • Holistic Patient and Family Care: Understand the emotional, physical, and educational support required for both the child and their family, promoting holistic care throughout the stoma journey.

Back to Basics Study Day (CPD Accredited*)

Suitable for registered nurses and HCA's wishing to understand more about what a stoma is, develop basic skills to enhance care they provide to people living with a stoma.

*This event is accredited for Continuing Professional Development, ensuring it meets industry standards for professional learning, helping healthcare professionals maintain skills, meet regulatory requirements, and deliver high-quality care.

Empowering Conversations: A Stoma Care Counselling Workshop

Suitable for Specialist Stoma Care Nurses working within the specialist sphere of stoma care.

Motivational Interviewing Training 

Motivational interviewing focuses on exploring and resolving uncertainty and centres on motivational processes within the individual that facilitate change. It is often defined as a collaborative conversation to strengthen a person’s own motivation for, and commitment to change. This 2-day workshop is designed to enhance your knowledge and improve your skills around Motivational Interviewing.

  • Define Motivational Interviewing: Identifying the theoretical background,  core principles and models used for this technique in stoma nursing. 

  • Gain an insight into MI techniques: Critically evaluates how the application of MI techniques assists the SSCN in their role. 

  • Ostomy care: Critically reviews, develops and applies principles of MI for the ostomate to actively support the individual with changes to their lifestyle following stoma formation. 

  • Communication Skills: Critically reflects upon the importance of being an engaging, attentive, active and  reflective listener to assist the ostomate on their life’s journey.

Back to Basics roadshows (CPD Accredited)

The Back to Basics roadshows have proven to be extremely popular and are an excellent way of educating ward staff about the basics of stoma care, providing them with the opportunity to learn and practice the fundamentals in managing a stoma and supporting their patients in the first few days after surgery
