Physical Well-Being

Permanent and significant changes in the body’s appearance and functional ability can change the way patients internalise their body image and self-concept. This can lead to feelings of decreased attractiveness and emotional distress, sometimes resulting in sexual problems.1

Common physical problems associated with having a stoma2

  • Changes in body appearance and weight gain
  • Skin irritation and inflammation
  • Parastomal hernia formation
  • Reduction in pleasurable activities e.g. exercise
  • Change in clothing style
  • Intimacy problems and loss of libido
  • Impairment in social activities and occupational functioning

There are many ways you can support your patient to accept their new body and feel comfortable in their own skin, as well as having the confidence to take part in physical activities.

“Emptying the bag is quick and easy and I love how it is all tucked away. The bag instead kind of makes me feel sexy! I don’t feel ashamed to show it.”
