The Discover Series gives you access to some of the most sought-after discussions and challenges in the realm of stoma care to help further your clinical practice and discover new ways to support your patients’ needs.
With a host of experienced and specialist speakers, we will hear about the psychosocial implications of living with a stoma, the science behind good skin care, high output management, as well global insights into the impact of a pandemic and stoma care.

Each episode is an hour long and provides key learning outcomes, which can contribute towards your CPD hours and NMC ‘The Code’ revalidation.
Session 1: The Impact of Covid-19 in Stoma Care & Beyond
In this first episode of the Discover Series, Angie Perrin explores the topical and challenging phenomena of the Covid-19 pandemic and its direct impact on the stoma care field. Speaking with a group of stoma nurse specialists from across the globe, we recognise and learn about experiences from everyday challenges to new ways of working. We go on to hear from high performance coach, Carolyne Crowe, who delves into the importance of learning cycles and acknowledging change to enhance thinking strategies and your clinical practice.

Carolyne Crowe, BSc (Hons), BVetMed (Hons), MSc, FRCVS, Dip Coaching, Dip Stress Management and Wellbeing
Carolyne is an experienced equine vet, an award-winning personal performance coach, mentor, international speaker, researcher and lecturer.
Carolyne has a Masters degree in Workplace Health and Wellbeing and continues to research this field. She is a master trainer in DISC behavioural profiling, a CPCAB trainer in Stress Management and Wellbeing, a certified trainer in Resilience, a Mental Health First Aider and an Honorary Lecturer of the University of Liverpool.
She was awarded “Life Coach of the year 2015” at the International Coaching Awards, became an honorary Fellow of The Coaching Academy in 2016 and a founding member of the Coaching of Excellence accreditation in 2019. Carolyne was awarded her Fellowship to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2020 for her contribution to the Veterinary Profession.
Loving a challenge, in 2017, Carolyne ran 10 marathons in 10 days raising over £120,000 for the Brooke charity.
Session 2: The Science behind Skin Health & Fistula Management
The second episode of the Discover Series delves into the importance of taking extra care of your skin. In this session we hear from Clinical Research Lead, Mireille Hamson about the anatomy and physiology of the skin and the value of maintaining healthy peri-stomal skin. We then go on to hear from Dr Amanda Goodby who guides us through a more in-depth look at some of the science behind maintaining good skin health. Lead nurse, Maddie White, then shares her knowledge and expertise on both simple and complex cases of Fistula management.

Mireille Hamson Clinical Lead in Research Salts Healthcare, UK
Mireille works for Salts Healthcare as the Clinical Lead in Research where she has a special interest in skin health related to stoma care and new product development. She has the responsibility for offering expert clinical opinion and connecting research with the patient experience. Whilst doing this she still engages in clinical practice as a Stoma Specialist Nurse two days a week, ensuring her practice is relevant and current.
Mireille has a BSc (Hons) and has been a Registered General Nurse (RGN) for 23 years, and in 2002 progressed into the specialist domain of stoma care. Throughout her career she has developed her knowledge and practice around stoma care, as well as being proactive in the development of a hospital and community stoma care pathway. She has presented at various conferences at a national and international level and lectured to a wide variety of health care professionals. She is passionate about the world of stoma care and enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills to empower others.
Amanda Goodby MSc, BSc, RN, Salts Healthcare, UK
Dr Amanda Goodby gained her PhD in polymer science and joined Salts Healthcare in 2013, researching adhesives in relation to skin health. She now works as the Principle skin health research scientist designing and overseeing clinical investigations into the effects of adhesives on the peri stomal skin area, examining quantitative methods to assess skin barrier damage.
Maddie White MSc, BSc, RN, Stoma/Colorectal Nurse Specialist, University Hospitals Birmingham and Chair of ASCN UK
Maddie has over 30 years of stoma care nursing experience and is currently Chair of ASCN UK, as well as working as Team leader with a team of 10 Clinical Nurse Specialists in a busy acute Trust in Birmingham, West Midlands. Maddie is committed to developing roles within stoma care and providing robust evidence-based support to nurses in order to enhance the stoma care nurses’ contribution to developing practice. Maddie also writes articles and editorials for journals on a regular basis and proof-reads articles for publication. She enjoys presenting at various forums in order to share knowledge and expertise.
Session 3: Psychosocial impact of stoma formation and the art of effective communication
The third episode of the Discover Series explores how a stoma can psychologically affect you. We hear from Lorna Haymes, the co-founder of #GetYourBellyOut, who shares the positive and negatives of her experiences with a stoma. High performance coach, Carolyne Crowe, then suggests ways that we can learn from this honest and frank account and communicate in a more effective way so patients receive the highest quality of care.

Lorna Haymes, Co-founder of #GetYourBellyOut
Diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at the age of 21, Lorna Haymes went on to have two operations to form a stoma and subsequently co-founded #GetYourBellyOut CIC alongside a fellow IBD’er, Victoria Marie. This award winning, patient-led, Community Interest Company is providing support to a global community of people affected by Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. GetYourBellyOut provides a safe haven through an online support group, aids research, hosts social events and activity days, influences practise and policies; as well as, increased awareness and understanding of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Session 4: RCNi Decision Support Tool and Management of a High Output Ileostomy
The fourth episode of the Discover Series presents the exciting new collaboration between Salts Healthcare and RCNi, working together to develop stoma specific modules and learning tools to support registered nurses and healthcare professionals worldwide with their continued professional development.
Dr Richard Hatchett, Senior Nurse Editor, introduces the RCNi platform, explaining how to access the interactive online and mobile resources such as the Decision Support Tool and the CPD training modules.
We are then guided through the specific RCNi module on the management of High Output Ileostomy in community and hospital setting, written and developed by Salts Medilink Stoma Care Nurses, Breege O’ Neill and Carol Althorp.

Dr Richard Hatchett, Registered nurse and the Senior Nurse Editor for RCNi
Dr Richard Hatchett is a registered nurse and the Senior Nurse Editor for RCNi, the multimedia and publishing house of the Royal College of Nursing.
He has worked primarily in cardiac and intensive care nursing, in higher education and is the former Head of Education and Standards at the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Deputy Head of School at the Royal Marsden hospital. He has published widely and led the team working with Salts Healthcare.

Delving into the key themes and challenges, Angie Perrin chairs each of the Discover series sessions to ensure important topics are fully covered. As Clinical Marketing Lead at Salts Healthcare, Angie brings a wealth of experience to her role. With years of practice as a stoma care nurse in the NHS, authoring many peer-reviewed published articles, and more recently overseeing the educational resources and Academy courses for nurses in the UK and internationally, Angie continues to make a difference to stoma care.
