Session 3: Virtual consultations and pre- operative stoma assessment
The last in this series of on-line education episodes for nurses evaluates the successful introduction of a virtual consultation within the specialist sphere of stoma care.
Barbara Milleret and Michelle Scripps are two Specialist Stoma Care Nurses working in North London who found it necessary to alter traditional nursing practices in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. They introduced virtual consultations for pre-operative patients requiring stoma formation, which having been positively evaluated by patients and health care professional colleagues will remain as an integral part of their patient care pathway.

Barbara Milleret
Barbara trained at Barnet Hospital. She started her nurse training in 1996 on a project 2000 course.
She started her first job on a Colorectal ward. This is where her interest in stoma care started.
In 2001 she had the opportunity to take up a training post in stoma care as a part time role which gradually increased to full time, leading the stoma dept at Chase Farm hospital.
After 3 years she commenced a role as Colorectal Cancer CNS which she found extremely enjoyable however, left in 2007 due to family commitments.
Barbara worked for 5 years in primary care as a community nurse before returning to stoma care in 2012 working for Salts healthcare in a community stoma nurse post.
This role involves, pre- op assessments, siting patients and planning care post discharge from hospital. Barbara and her colleagues work very closely with their local NHS trust. She has a great interest in gynae-oncology and the stoma journey of this group of patients.
Michelle Scripps
Michelle is Community stoma care nurse working across North London for Salts Healthcare.
Michelle trained at North Middlesex University Hospital. She completed the Principles and Practice in Stoma Care Module in 2017 and has been working in the specialist sphere of stoma care for 6 years. Prior to this she worked on a general surgical ward.

Session 2: Consent in the digital age
In this second episode the concept of consent is explored for all nurses. Mark Cawley, a Senior Associate with Irwin Mitchell law firm also examines more closely how the introduction of virtual consultations is impacting on the process of obtaining informed consent.

Mark Cawley, Senior Associate
Mark Cawley is a Senior Associate in the Birmingham Medical Negligence team at Irwin Mitchell law firm. Mark previously gave a Medico-legal update at Association of Stoma Care Nurses Conference in 2016.
Mark act for clients in medical law cases in areas such as accident and emergency, cancer, birth injury, spinal injuries, fatalities, misdiagnosis and surgery. Mark has also completed training provided by Mental Health First Aid England to become a Healthy Mind Advocate.
Prior to joining the firm, Mark studied Law at the University of Birmingham and graduated in 2011, then studied the Legal Practice Course at the University of Law and graduated with a Distinction in 2012. He then worked as an Information Governance Officer at Nottinghamshire Police and travelled across South America and Australia.

Session 1: Data Protection - do you know enough?
This first episode in Discover Series 3 appraises the introduction of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018. Kate Pleasant, an Associate at Knights PLC law firm illustrates what the legal obligations and responsibilities are for nurses with regards to accessing and storing patient data and how this altered in the advent of GDPR. Kate identifies the importance of keeping patient data safe and only storing/accessing essential information.

Kate Pleasant, Associate
Kate joined Knights PLC as a paralegal over 6 years ago, and subsequently trained and qualified as a solicitor within the commercial and data protection team. Kate is now an Associate and advises on all aspects of data protection compliance, including policy and contractual documents and data breach handling. Kate has also been involved in the delivery of large- scale data protection compliance audits for a number of clients, and on a day to day basis co-ordinates the delivery of subject access request responses on a fully outsourced or advisory basis as required.
